GREECE BEFORE GREECE: THE EMPIRE OF LEMINIA
The Pelasgian Civilization
Before the arrival of Indo-European migrations, the region now known as Greece (Hellas) was inhabited by a mysterious group of people collectively called the Pelasgians. Ancient Greek sources often mention these pre-Hellenic inhabitants as the region's original settlers. However, due to limited evidence, much about their history and culture remains speculative.
### Origins and Migration
One theory suggests that the Pelasgians originated from the Black Sea's coasts, possibly displaced by the Black Sea flood hypothesis, a catastrophic event believed to have occurred around 5600 BCE when rising sea levels transformed the Black Sea from a freshwater lake into a saltwater sea. This migration theory is debated, as no direct archaeological evidence links the Black Sea flood to the Pelasgians.
Upon their arrival in the Aegean, the Pelasgians are believed to have settled in various parts of the region, eventually splitting into different groups:
1. The Minoans: Centered on Crete, they developed an advanced maritime civilization.
2. The Lemniotes: Associated with the island of Lemnos and nearby areas.
3. The Central Pelasgians: Scattered across the mainland in smaller, independent city-states.
The Pelasgians are often attributed with certain distinctive traits:
- Writing and Language: While some theorize that the Pelasgians used a syllabic script and spoke pre-Indo-European languages, these claims remain speculative. The relationship of their language to Basque is unsubstantiated, and their possible connection to Linear A or Linear B scripts is inconclusive.
- Religion: They likely had their own religious practices, which may have influenced early Greek polytheism. However, little is definitively known about their beliefs.
- Governance: Unlike the Greeks, the Pelasgians likely did not practice democracy. Their governance systems may have been tribal, monarchic, or theocratic, but there is no evidence to confirm this.
The Pelasgians' dominance in the Aegean waned during the 3rd millennium BCE, likely due to invasions by Indo-European-speaking Greek settlers. While the Pelasgians disappeared as a distinct group, their influence may have persisted in the mythology and cultural practices of their successors.
Modern interpretations of the Pelasgians are heavily influenced by ancient Greek writings, which may reflect myth as much as history. Archaeological evidence to fully corroborate the claims about their origins, culture, and influence is lacking, and much of what we "know" remains speculative.
The Pelasgians were undoubtedly significant in the prehistory of the Aegean, but their story is one that scholars are still piecing together—caution is warranted when considering unverified theories.
Pelasgian Distinctiveness: Ancient texts portrayed the Pelasgians as a separate and possibly older group compared to other peoples of the region, including the Illyrians.
However, whether the Pelasgians were linguistically, culturally, or ethnically related to the Illyrians or other European groups is unknown. Claims about a lack of recognition of "cousins" should be treated cautiously, as there is no direct evidence of how the Pelasgians viewed other cultures.
Some scholars have speculated that the Pelasgians and Illyrians may have shared a distant connection as remnants of pre-Indo-European populations in southeastern Europe. This hypothesis is primarily based on linguistic and cultural similarities, such as shared agricultural practices or religious symbols, but it remains speculative.
Their mysterious legacy remains etched in the ruins and myths of ancient Hellas, a precursor to the civilizations that followed.
