Hamilcar Barca (c. 275–228 BCE) was a Carthaginian general and statesman, renowned as the father of Hannibal and the architect of Carthage's resurgence after its defeat in the First Punic War. Born in Carthage, Hamilcar rose to prominence during the conflict with Rome, commanding Carthaginian forces in Sicily. Although the war ended in defeat, Hamilcar's skillful leadership earned him respect and laid the foundation for Carthage's recovery.

After the war, Hamilcar crushed a dangerous mercenary rebellion in Carthage and turned his attention to expanding Carthaginian influence in Spain. He established Carthaginian territories there, securing resources and wealth to rebuild his nation’s power. Hamilcar’s strategy in Spain included military conquest and the establishment of alliances, creating a power base for future conflicts with Rome. He also instilled a fierce hatred of Rome in his children, particularly Hannibal, who would later become one of Rome’s greatest adversaries.

Hamilcar died in 228 BCE during a military campaign in Spain, reportedly drowning while retreating from a battle. His legacy as a brilliant strategist and the progenitor of the Barcid dynasty endured, shaping the course of the Punic Wars and Carthaginian history.
