On December 18, 218 BC- Carthaginian General Hannibal Barca routs Roman troops at the Battle of Trebia in the Second Punic War in Italy. Hannibal would follow this victory with others at Lake Trasimene and Cannae as Rome found itself in a deepening crisis. The Romans could not defeat Hannibal but the Carhaginians lacked the siege equipment and numbers to lay siege to Rome. What followed was a war of attrition over the next 14 years where Hannibal tried to isolate Rome while the Romans waited Hannibal out. Eventually Scipio Africanus invaded Carthaginian held Hispania and marched on Carthage itself to force Hannibal out of Italy.
