"Aristodemus: The Spartan Who Lived"
In 480 BCE, during the Greco-Persian Wars, the Battle of Thermopylae became legendary. King Leonidas of Sparta led 300 Spartans, along with a few thousand Greek allies, in a heroic stand against the vast Persian army of Xerxes I. Among the Spartans were Aristodemus and Eurytus, both of whom were suffering from severe eye infections and unable to fight.
As the battle reached its climax, Eurytus, despite his blindness, returned to the front lines and fought to his death. Aristodemus, however, was unable to rejoin the fight. When he returned to Sparta, he was labeled a coward and faced severe ostracism for not dying with his comrades.
Despite this, Aristodemus sought to redeem his honor. At the Battle of Plataea in 479 BCE, he fought with exceptional bravery and sacrificed his life, ultimately restoring his reputation in the eyes of his fellow Spartans.
