THE CAREER OF LEGIONARY NONIUS DATUS
Nonius Datus was a soldier of the Legio III Augusta, the only Roman legion stationed in North Africa during the 2nd century AD. His career provides valuable insights into the multifaceted roles that Roman soldiers played beyond traditional military duties, particularly their involvement in civic projects and engineering tasks.
While serving with the III Augusta, Datus was frequently called upon to assist in civil engineering efforts, notably in the boring of a tunnel through a mountain to facilitate water flow into the province of Mauretania. This task exemplifies how Roman soldiers, trained for warfare, also functioned as builders and specialists during peacetime, contributing to the empire's infrastructure.
Datus received authorization from his Legate to take leave from his unit for these engineering projects, indicating the importance placed on such civic duties. During one of his visits to the site, he measured the progress of two tunnels being excavated from opposite ends of the mountain. He discovered a potentially critical issue: the combined lengths of the tunnels exceeded the total width of the mountain, which could jeopardize the integrity of the project.
To expedite the work, Datus strategically utilized men from the Auxilia and sailors, capitalizing on the competitive dynamic between the groups to enhance productivity. His engineering endeavors not only highlight the diverse responsibilities of Roman soldiers but also underscore the interconnectedness of military and civilian life in maintaining and expanding the empire's infrastructure.
