"The death of Drusus"
Drusus, also known as Nero Claudius Drusus, was indeed one of the most promising figures in the Roman Empire during his time. The younger brother of Tiberius and the stepson of Emperor Augustus, Drusus gained fame for his military campaigns in Germania, where he led successful expeditions beyond the Rhine and deep into Germanic territory. His achievements laid the groundwork for future Roman military operations in the region.
The mysterious encounter that Cassius Dio describes adds a dramatic element to Drusus' fate:
"For a woman of superhuman size met him and said: 'Whither, pray, art thou hastening, insatiable Drusus? It is not fated that thou shalt look upon all these lands. But depart; for the end alike of thy labours and of thy life is already at hand.'" (Cassius Dio, *Roman History*, LV, 1).
According to the legend, this prophetic figure warned Drusus of his impending death, a forewarning that proved tragically accurate. Drusus fell ill and died suddenly while returning from his campaign, possibly due to complications from a fall or illness. His death at the age of 30 shocked Rome, as noted by the historian Velleius Paterculus:
"But, after accomplishing to a great extent the subjection of Germany, in which much blood of that people was shed on various battle-fields, an unkind fate carried him off during his consulship, in his thirtieth year." (Velleius Paterculus, *Roman History*, II, 97).
Drusus' death was a significant loss for Rome. His campaigns had pushed the Roman frontier further into Germania than ever before, and his death left a void in the Roman leadership. The Romans continued to engage in military activities in Germania, but any ambitions of turning it into a Roman province were ultimately thwarted by the catastrophic defeat of Varus in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD. This defeat forced the Romans to retreat to the Rhine, marking the limits of Roman expansion in that region.
Drusus' legacy, however, lived on, and he was remembered as a hero and a model of Roman virtue. His death is often seen as a tragic turning point, highlighting the challenges and dangers of Rome's expansionist ambitions.
