In 390 BCE, Camillus’s ingenious tactics brought Rome from ruin to victory over the Gauls

Marcus Furius Camillus, often hailed as a "second founder of Rome," exhibited tactical genius during the Gaulish invasion of 390 BCE. Following the catastrophic Battle of the Allia, where Rome was severely defeated, the Gauls sacked the city, leaving the Romans desperate and on the verge of collapse. Camillus, who had previously been exiled, was urgently recalled by the Senate and entrusted with Rome’s survival.

Camillus implemented a tactical approach that was both disciplined and innovative. Avoiding direct confrontation with the Gaulish forces, he leveraged his knowledge of Roman terrain and utilized hit-and-run tactics to weaken the Gauls gradually. Through strategic ambushes and by cutting off supplies, Camillus harassed the Gauls, eventually drawing them into a decisive confrontation. The Gauls, worn out and demoralized, were no match for Camillus's organized forces when he finally led them into open battle.

Camillus's victory restored confidence and morale to the Roman people. He is credited with not only saving Rome from immediate destruction but also laying the groundwork for future military organization. His tactics against the Gauls highlighted a shift in Roman warfare, emphasizing discipline, strategy, and adaptability—traits that would come to define Roman military power in the centuries to follow
