The assassination of Marcus Tullius Cicero marked a dark chapter in Rome's political history. Cicero, a brilliant orator, philosopher, and politician, was fiercely opposed to Mark Antony following the assassination of Julius Caesar. As a staunch supporter of the Roman Republic, Cicero spoke passionately against Antony in his Philippics, publicly condemning his aspirations for power.Following a power shift, Antony, alongside Octavian and Lepidus, formed the Second Triumvirate in 43 BCE. The trio created a list of their enemies to eliminate, with Cicero’s name prominently featured due to his harsh criticisms. Cicero, realizing the imminent danger, attempted to flee Rome. However, he was captured at his villa in Formiae. The brutal order was executed on December 7, 43 BCE. Roman soldiers killed the 63-year-old Cicero, severing his head and hands—an explicit act of revenge, given that these hands had penned the fiery speeches against Antony. As a final insult, his severed head and hands were displayed on the Rostra in the Roman Forum.Cicero’s death was a significant moment, highlighting the ruthlessness of Roman politics and the end of a voice advocating for republican values. His legacy, however, remains immortal through his writings and contributions to philosophy and law.OFER PRETURI BUNE DE PUBLICITATE IN FELUL URMATOR !
