ANTE DIEM QVARTVM AVGVSTAS QVINGENTI TRIGINTA SEPTEM AB VRBE CONDITA (August 2, 216 BC) in the PROELIVM CANNENSE (Battle of Cannae) died the CONSVL (consul) CNÆVS SERVILIVS GEMINVS (Gneus Servilius Geminus)
Gneus Servilius Geminus (... - CANNÆ (Cannae), 2 August 216 BCE) was a consul of the RES PVBLICA POPVLI ROMANI (Roman Republic).
Biography
Son of PVBLIVS SERVILIVS GEMINVS (Publius Servilius Geminus), CNÆVS (Gneus) was elected CONSVL (consul) for the year 217 BC, second year of the SECVNDVM BELLVM PVNICVM (second Punic war). In early March military operations against Hannibal began, starting from the city of ARIMINVM (Rimini).
Following the disastrous defeat in the PVGNA AD TRASVMENNVM (Battle of Lake Trasimeno), in which the other consul CAIVS FLAMINIVS (Gaius Flaminius) lost his life, the command of military operations in Italy against Hannibal was taken over by QVINTVS FABIVS MAXIMVS (Quintus Fabius Maximus). CNÆVS (Gneus) was given command of the CLASSIS ROMANA (Roman fleet) for the defense of SARDINIA (Sardinia) and Corsica.
In November at the end of the dictatorship period, CNÆVS (Gneus) again obtained the command of the Roman forces, but without undertaking any operation. He was appointed proconsul for the year 216 BC and he faced the Carthaginian army in frequent skirmishes, exercising the new talents as suggested by the current consul LVCIVS ÆMILIVS PAVLLVS (Lucius Aemilius Paullus). He took part in the PROELIVM CANNENSE (Battle of Cannae) and died there.
