Antony's retreat from Parthia was a continuation of skirmishes and ambushes. The Roman commander finally decided to advance in a square formation, with the lightly armed men and cavalry on the sides, who attacked the Parthians and then turned back when they got too far away. However, the excess of confidence led Flavius Gallus to lose contact with the army, while other commanders, perhaps out of spite, sent him reinforcements one by one. Antonio himself had to intervene but it was too late. Gallo died shortly thereafter with four arrows in his chest, 3,000 were dead and 5,000 wounded.⠀
Antony passed the destroyed Roman camp, while the men despite everything were still attached to him and greeted him imperator. He finally decided to make a speech to all the soldiers, urging them to resist. Having resumed their march, the Parthians attacked again. By now they believed that the Romans were in disarray. Antony, on the other hand, had given the order to form a sort of tortoise, with the legionaries in the front row on their knees and those behind covering their heads with the shield and the light troops behind them, in order to repel the Parthian arrows. The latter interpreted the gesture as a sign of fatigue and of an army close to surrender, therefore they approached recklessly believing they just had to finish off the Romans. These rushed in great ardor against the Parthians, who fled.⠀
However, the Parthians continued to pursue Antony, who seems to continually recite "o ten thousand", a clear reference to Xenophon's Anabasis. In the end the Romans managed to save themselves, but the losses were terrible.⠀
